{"id":647,"date":"2014-05-27T18:35:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T18:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/anthrohealth.net\/blog\/?p=647"},"modified":"2014-05-27T18:35:00","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T18:35:00","slug":"a-call-to-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anthrohealth.net\/blog\/a-call-to-action\/","title":{"rendered":"A Call to Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/spunkybong.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/05\/c11.jpg?resize=474%2C293\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"293\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Just as I finished President Carter&#8217;s new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Call-Action-Women-Religion-Violence\/dp\/1476773955\" target=\"_blank\">A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power<\/a>, I heard the news about the killing rampage in Isla Vista, CA. \u00a0 Here was a perfect example of what President Carter described: a man who used power and violence to punish women.<\/p>\n<p>While religion has not yet been mentioned as an explanation for the killer&#8217;s rampage, attitudes in the US have been shaped by religious ideologies that value men over women. \u00a0 This over-valuing of men permeates all aspects of our culture. \u00a0Many laws in the US control women in ways that clearly indicate that the law-makers \u00a0do not view women as\u00a0adults equal to men. \u00a0When misogyny is rampant, violence against women is the result.<\/p>\n<p>President Carter is a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/theelders.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Elders<\/a>, a group of\u00a0&#8216;independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights.&#8217; \u00a0 One major focus of The Elders is on achieving <a href=\"http:\/\/theelders.org\/equality-girls-women\" target=\"_blank\">equality for women and girls<\/a>. \u00a0 The Carter Center, founded by President Carter and Rosalynn\u00a0Carter, lists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cartercenter.org\/news\/features\/p\/human_rights\/a-call-to-action.html\" target=\"_blank\">23 action steps<\/a> that &#8216;can help blaze the road to progress&#8217; and\u00a0end misogyny.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/tony_porter_a_call_to_men\" target=\"_blank\">Tony Porter called to men to get out of the Man Box.<\/a> \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-dUNAZNNjCpw\/UWbxe0hJgpI\/AAAAAAAAAN4\/SoVP0ISsVJc\/s1600\/TheManBox.jpg?resize=400%2C395\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"395\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>The way we socialize men creates violence against women. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.acalltomen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">It is up to men to challenge and change male culture.<\/a> \u00a0It is up to men to end violence against women. \u00a0It is up to men, the many men who truly care about women, to end misogyny.\u00a0Let us heed President Carter&#8217;s and Tony Porter&#8217;s Calls to Action and end misogyny now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"wp_fb_like_button\" style=\"margin:5px 0 5px 5px;float:right;height:100px;\"><script src=\"http:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/all.js#xfbml=1\"><\/script><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/anthrohealth.net\/blog\/a-call-to-action\/\" send=\"true\" layout=\"standard\" width=\"450\" show_faces=\"true\" font=\"arial\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\"><\/fb:like><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just as I finished President Carter&#8217;s new book, A Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence, and Power, I heard the news about the killing rampage in Isla Vista, CA. \u00a0 Here was a perfect example of what President Carter described: a man who used power and violence to punish women.
